DIY Decoden Frame (A Cute and Customizable Gift✨)

DIY Decoden Frames At Home. Includes Pictures of a diy frame using whipped cream style glue, and beads. The picture is of a cat inside the frame. The frame reads Just a girl. The elements on the frame such as the whipped cream and beads are light purple and pink with rhinestones, pearls and charms like a gummy bear, hears, and various desserts.

I fear I’m in my DIY bag and have found my new favorite hobby.

For my birthday I got some girlfriends together to take photos and decorate frames in the decoder style (you know, the ones with the whipped cream piping and charms). We had an absolute ball and I’ve been creating frames ever since. Not only is it so satisfying and easy to make but they add a personalized touch to and they can be great gifts.

And the best part?
You can start this for way less than you think. Take a look!

💕 What is a Decoden Frame?

If you’ve seen those super cute, decorated phone cases or mirrors covered in “whipped cream” and charms—that’s decoden.  Decooden is a Japanese art form derived from “deco” (decorated) and “denwa” (phone), involving heavily embellishing items with whipped, pipeable silicone cream, rhinestones, and kawaii charms. Popular on phone cases and consoles, it creates a 3D, “over-the-top” fun and colorful style that is highly customizable and often resembles fake icing.

For this DIY, we’re taking that same concept and turning it into a custom photo frame that looks like it came straight off Pinterest.

Think:

  • glossy whipped texture
  • tiny desserts + charms
  • sparkly details
  • something that feels handmade but elevated

💸 How Much Does This Cost?

Okay real talk: I went a little overboard with supplies (no regrets 😭).

But you absolutely do not need everything I used.

👉 You can start this for under $50

Here’s how I’d break it down:

✨ Starter Version (what you actually need)

  • Acrylic frame
  • Whipped cream glue
  • 1 charm pack

💡 This alone is enough to make a full frame.

💅 Extra Cute Add-Ons (optional but fun)

  • Rhinestones
  • Letter charms
  • Additional themed charms

This is where you can customize your vibe (and yes… I did get carried away here). You can also opt for a Decoden Kit that provides the charms and whipped cream glue together! I opted to get the items individually to choose specific gems and beads.

📸 If You Want to Be Extra (like me)

  • Instax printer
  • Instax film

Totally optional—but I love being able to print photos instantly for my frames. I often use the photos and the frames as little gifts or stocking stuffers to share memories with family, friends, and coworkers.

🛒 Everything I Used

I linked everything below so you can mix and match depending on your budget:

💡 Tip: If you’re just starting, grab the frame + glue + one charm pack first.

🎥 How to Make a Decoden Frame

This is way easier than it looks, I promise.

1. Pipe the “whipped cream”

Use your glue like frosting and pipe it around the edges of the frame.

Don’t overthink it—imperfections actually make it look better.

2. Add your charms

Place your charms while the glue is still wet.

This is the fun part—just go with what looks cute to you.

3. Fill in the details

Add rhinestones or smaller pieces to fill any gaps.

Clear magnetic frame with decoden style decoration. Using purple whipped piping cream with rhinestones and beads on top. The beads read, just a girl.

4. Let it dry

Give it several hours (or overnight) to fully set.

Then you’re done ✨

💭 Final Thoughts

I didn’t expect to love this as much as I do, but there’s something about creating something cutesy with your own hands that just hits.

And I love that you can:

  • keep it simple
  • or go all out
  • or make a whole collection

If you try this, I need to know, because us diy girlies have to stick together..

🫶 Save This for Later

If you’re not ready to make one yet, save this for your next cozy night in.

Trust me… this is one of those “this + a good movie + snacks” kind of activities.

And the more people, the merrier.
