Let me be transparent with you. I have a problem. A red problem. And I have absolutely zero interest in solving it.

Red is my Roman Empire. It has been for years. There is something about the way red sits against dark skin that feels like it was designed specifically for us. The depth, the warmth, the way it demands attention without trying. Red on melanin rich skin is genuinely one of the most beautiful color combinations that exists and I will die on this hill.

So today I’m sharing my actual red pieces — the ones living in my closet right now — and exactly how I wear them. Consider this your permission slip to go full red-aholic. Before we get into it, please know that this blog post contains affiliate links.

The Sweater: Urban Outfitters Off-the-Shoulder Sweater

The Glasses: Tijn Eyewear Charlene Brow Line Red Eyeglasses

Red Charlene Tijin Eye Glasses worn by a cmilink black woman with brown hair and a red sweater.

We’re starting here because honestly my red era began with these frames. I was not prepared for how much a pair of glasses could shift an entire vibe. The Charlene Browline from Tij Eyewear is a cat eye browline hybrid and the red colorway against dark skin is everything. I wear these with literally everything — a simple white tee suddenly has a whole personality when these are on my face.

How I wear them: As the pop of color in an otherwise neutral outfit. Black, white, cream, camel — the glasses do the heavy lifting.

The Scrunchie: Room Shop Giant Satin Scrunchie

Do not underestimate the power of a red hair accessory. This giant satin scrunchie from Room Shop is one of my most worn pieces and it cost almost nothing. I wore it to Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and it completed my entire Slytherin alumni moment. A red scrunchie on a sleek bun or low ponytail is the easiest same-outfit upgrade that exists.

How I wear it: With my all black outfits when I want one intentional pop of color. Also excellent for the “I just want my hair out of my face but make it fashion” days.

The Ballet Flats

Red shoes are a different category of confidence. There is something about looking down at your feet and seeing red that makes you walk differently. I style mine with wide leg jeans and white ruffle socks for that very specific French girl meets downtown girl energy. They also look incredible peeking out from under a maxi skirt or dress.

How I wear them: Wide leg jeans, white frilly socks, and a simple top. Let the shoes be the moment.

The Bag: Chloé Leather Crossbody Bag

A red bag is an investment in your entire wardrobe. This Chloé crossbody in that deep burgundy red is the kind of piece that makes a neutral outfit look intentional and an already bold outfit look curated. The ring hardware detail is chef’s kiss. I reach for this when I want to look like I have my life together even when I absolutely do not.

How I wear it: Crossbody over a trench coat. Crossbody over a white button down. Crossbody over everything. There is no wrong answer.

The Sweatshirt: Levi’s 90s Red Embroidered Raw Hem Crew Neck Cropped Sweatshirt

This one is giving corporate cosplay of the day in the best way. The cropped length, the raw hem detail, the Levi’s logo — it’s casual but it’s intentional. I style this with high waisted wide leg jeans and let the red do its thing. It’s also the perfect transitional piece for those weird in-between weather days that LA pretends don’t exist.

How I wear it: High waisted wide leg jeans, white sneakers, and the Chloé bag if I’m feeling fancy. Or with a denim midi skirt for something a little more unexpected.

The Rugby Shirt: HANNA Stripe Rugby Shirt

The stripes on this one technically aren’t all red but the red is the dominant energy and I’m counting it. This rugby shirt has become one of my most reached for pieces because it’s that perfect combination of preppy and relaxed. It looks great half tucked into a mini skirt or worn oversized with biker shorts. The collar adds just enough polish to make it feel intentional.

How I wear it: Half tucked into a denim mini with white sneakers. Or fully oversized with cycling shorts and my red ballet flats for a very coordinated unintentional moment.

The Boots: Sam Edelman Women’s James Western Boot

Red cowboy boots are not for the timid and that is exactly why I love them. The Sam Edelman James Western Boot in that deep red suede is a statement piece that somehow also goes with everything. I’ve worn these with midi skirts, wide leg jeans, and dresses. Every single time someone asks about them.

How I wear them: With a denim midi skirt and a simple white tee for that effortless western girl moment. Or with a flowy dress when I want the boots to be the entire personality of the outfit.

The Vest: Bubble Puffer Vest

This vest is pure joy in clothing form. The red gingham quilted pattern is so good and the western cut makes it feel considered rather than just practical. I throw this over everything in fall and winter as that final layer that pulls an outfit together. It also works as a standalone top situation when it’s that weird LA almost-cold-but-not-really temperature.

How I wear it: Over a white long sleeve and wide leg jeans. Or over a black turtleneck with the red boots for a full red moment that I cannot be held responsible for.

The Bottom Line

Red on dark skin is not a risk. It is a gift. Whether you start with a scrunchie or go straight for the cowboy boots is entirely up to you. But I am here to tell you from personal experience that there is a red piece waiting to become your most complimented item.

All of my red pieces are linked on my ShopMy. Go forth and be a pop of red-aholic.
